Dredging and Underwater Works Co. Ltd was established on 20th April 1947 pursuant to a Decree by the Minister of Navigation. Upon its incorporation the company was provided with the assets of the former Port Reconstruction Office. The Company was located in the area where it still operates today, in buildings (barracks) from the pre-war period. The production was developed with the vessels that had been raised from the seabed and repaired: dredgers, dump barges and tugs. Some of the equipment came from the repossession of Polish property found in the German territory. The first investment procurements took place in 1949, when a dredger and seagoing tugs were bought in England. Further development of the fleet and investments took place in the 60s and 70s, when modern dredgers and tugs were bought, mostly in the Netherlands. In the 90s more new dredgers were purchased and the older vessels were modernised.
In February 1991 the Company was transferred into a single-owner State Limited Liability Company, in order to facilitate the privatization process. The transfer provided the grounds for negotiations with foreign and domestic partners in order to sell a part of the shares in the transformed venture. The process of privatization was completed in March 1999 and as a result most of the Company’s shares were sold to a private domestic investor. The Treasury still holds 20% of the Company’s shares, including a part to be distributed among PRCiP employees free-of-charge.
No major changes in the production profile have occurred during the whole history of the company. The demand for services, mostly from domestic customers, resulted from specific needs: in the 50s and 60s the reconstruction of the sea potential of Polish ports and inlet channels, the removal of wrecks, etc., and in the 70s the major sea investments, e.g. the construction of the North Port. At present the demand for services comes mostly from the necessity to maintain the navigability of ports and channels as well as protective works (strengthening shores) thanks to which the Hel Peninsula, so unique in Europe, has been saved. Both during its operation as a state treasury company and as a private venture PRCiP has been rendering hydraulic engineering services to Navy ports. It has also been discharging the tasks within the militarization of the plant in case of the ‘W’ hour, including the maintenance of special state reserves. In the years 1947-2005 the total volume of material dredged by the Company amounted to 163,642,899 m3.
